In the month of February 2008 Acerinox, S.A. took the decision to undertake, in phases, a new project in Malaysia. This decision following an in-depth feasibility study that included other alternatives resulted in the construction of an integrated production plant in Johor Bahru. The land would consist of 140 hectares (350 acres), with direct access to the sea. On January 15, 2009 the definitive agreement was signed with NISSHIN STEEL, which structured its participation in the BAHRU STAINLESS project. On December 2, 2010, the first coil was processed in the facilities.
The project includes an integral stainless steel mill with 1 million tonnes of production capacity annually.
The first two phases of the investment are currently in operation, including a hot annealing line, two cold rolling mills and a cold annealing line, as well as two skin-pass mills and several finishing lines, with a capacity of production of 400,000 tons/year and a cumulative investment of more than 600 million dollars.
Bahru Stainless supplies a wide range of high quality stainless steel types and finishes, with Malaysia and the ASEAN countries being their main markets.
Its shareholders are Acerinox (67%), Nisshin Steel (30%) and Hanwa (3%)
