The longest bridge in the world, linking Hong Kong and Macao, opens containing more than 3,000 tonnes of Acerinox stainless steel

From its plant in Ponferrada, the Group supplied a type of stainless steel designed for use in construction and ideal for withstanding contact with the sea

The Acerinox Group supplied 3,000 tonnes of stainless steel for the construction of the recently opened bridge between Hong Kong and Macao. It is the longest bridge in the world, stretching 55 kilometres (35 kilometres over the sea) and has been a colossal engineering project in which elevated sections alternate with tunnels on four artificial islands built in the sea.

Acerinox supplied, through Arminox, reinforcement steel bar for the project, a type of stainless steel designed for use by the construction industry and manufactured at the Roldán plant in Ponferrada (Spain). Roldán is an Acerinox subsidiary which specialises in long product.

Through Roldán, Acerinox also has supplied stainless steel reinforcement wire rod for the construction of other large bridges, including the Queensferry Crossing between Edinburgh and the north of Scotland (2.7 kilometres long and almost 40 metres wide), which, by 2016 became the longest cable-stayed bridge with three central towers in the world and the tallest in the United Kingdom.

Stainless steel is the perfect material for constructions built near the coast, even in direct contact with salt water. Due to its resistance to corrosion produced by chloride, so it retains its properties unlike conventional steel, which keeps deteriorating over time.
